Should we view the body?

Many people find it helpful to spend time with the person who has died before the funeral. This special time is an opportunity to say goodbye.  Our tastefully appointed facilities offer a quiet relaxing space for families and friends.

This time together can assist in the grieving process as it allows people to begin to accept the reality of the death of the person. It can be a time to place mementos such as cards, letters, small gifts, photos, flowers and other significant objects with the person. Some families choose to take the person home or to another venue, and they will spend some days with the person who has died.  We can arrange this for you.

We are happy to make the funeral arrangements that fit with your wishes, at a time suitable to all family members.

Children benefit from being included in the preparations for a funeral. Visiting, seeing and touching someone they love can be a positive experience as it allows them to say goodbye and helps them to accept the reality and finality of death.

Historically children were not involved in the funeral process.  Today most experts would agree that children should have the same opportunity to view the person who had died and to attend the funeral if they so wish.

At Academy Funerals unless requested we never set up a viewing in a coffin.  We prefer to conduct the viewing with your loved one on a dressing table, that looks just like a single bed.  This way the person looks as though they are in bed asleep.  We find that this method is much easier on families including children as a bed is a natural place to see someone.  Whereas, a coffin or casket can be very confronting and quite upsetting for many people.

Viewing or spending time with someone you love is a very natural and beneficial thing to do.  It is not scary or macabre, there is nothing medical or clinical to worry about and children accept the situation extremely well as it is also a way for them to come to terms with what has happened.

Viewings at Academy Funerals can be during the week day, weekends or evenings by appointment.
